Grace like rain...

... falls down on me. (lyrics from the "Grace Like Rain" by Todd Agnew)
I feel really blessed.

After school (Hebron), I tried really hard to get out of India. I wanted to study anywhere but here mainly because I had many stereotypical notions about the education system here and frankly I was terrified of living here and never getting out. I don't feel the same way anymore (well, most of the time, I have a good dose of "I-hate-living-in-India" days but doesn't everybody?) I feel like I have a purpose in this country. Heck, I know there is a purpose. Nevertheless, it was difficult, especially because practically ALL my friends live/study abroad and I wanted to be closer to them (although that's barely possible since they live in all the corners of the world and therefore there would have to be atleast 10 of me to be close to my closest friends.) But God, in His infinite wisdom had other plans. He literally closed all doors, windows, cracks, holes, etc of my leaving India. I'm serious. I think He hinted at it many times - like complications with my passport, but I wouldn't listen and I pushed and tirelessly fought for it so finally to get through my thick skull He had to make it pretty obvious where He wanted me (In India, more specifically in Bombay living with my grand-mom) and honestly, today I could not be more thankful.

I don’t know how to explain it but when you’re in the centre of His will, everything falls into place and because He loves you He will provide and ‘make up’ for all the things that you think you are missing out on in ways that you could never have imagined, in ways that are so much more meaningful…

Friends. The friends I made at Hebron are so so precious to me and it kills me that I have to be so far from them but over the last two-and-a-half years I have had the chance to meet
- Orville, two times.
- Niru, two times.
- Taryn, three or four times.
- Grace, many times because we both lived in Bangalore for a while after school.
- Jonny, two times.
- Sakshi, once.
- Tashu, once.
…amongst other Hebronites. I’ve been able to have great phone conversations with so many others. I get letters :)

And to top it all off, I’ve also made the most special bunch of friends in Bombay too. You know who you are! Honestly, I wouldn’t have survived without you :)

The last few years out of school have been bumpy learning curves and living in Bombay with my granny - well, it ain't easy by any stretch of the word - but I wouldn’t exchange this for anything because I know that I am where I am meant to be and there’s no better knowledge than that.

So why am I telling you all this? Well, its just sort of been a recurring theme in my life at the moment. And this verse keeps coming back to me: “For I know the plans that I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…” (Jer 29:11) and I thought I’d share that with you…

I’ve had the most special one-and-a-half days with Grace and her friend, Onyou. They’re both South Koreans and live in Bangalore. Grace and I have been friends for almost 8 years; we started our journey at Hebron together in 2000. She studies in S. Korea and came back to India for a short holiday with her family and paid me a short and extremely sweet visit in Bombay. Oh, and she brought Kim Chi, LOTS of it :) But more on all that later. For now, a few pictures…

computer-time.Shopping in Bandra.Mitzi (Orville's younger sister) and Grace at home.Grace, telling us about a Korean book she read. All of us just before they headed out to the train station. Onyou, Mitzi, Grace and Tina.

Grace like rain falls down on me. Have a great weekend!

Following That Star...

The three wise men are on their way...
Matthew 2:10-11 (NLT)
"When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

Oooh, I love the Christmas story. A King born in a smelly stable. Mighty God becoming man to be among us, to transform our lives. Predictions and years of waiting coming to fulfillment in the form of a screaming, helpless baby.

Trust God to cook up a story that no one could've imagined.

We're expecting pomp and glory and He gives us a barn, complete with barn-yard animals. We're expecting a warrior-King and He gives us a servant who washes the feet of His own disciples. We're expecting Him to kill all the bad people and He dies on the cross - the ultimate sacrifice.

But He lives. So that you and I, also, may live.

We may not always understand God and the strange things He does but He is good. I believe that.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

P.s. A Baby In a Barn. Brilliant!

Always Hope

I tried to sleep. But my nose is too blocked and I am too scared to sleep with my mouth open cause I don't unwanted creatures crawling into my mouth. (Yuck I know) So here I am, clandestinely blogging at 11:38 pm seriously testing my touch-typing skills seeing as I can't see the keyboard if even I want to cause the room is completely dark and the monitor brightness is at its lowest just in case Granny gets out of bed and sees light and decides to check on me in which case I will be dead cause I'm not supposed to be straining my eyes like this and I did say I was going to go to college tomorrow but if infact I do manage to get up in the morning, I doubt I'll make it in time for an 8 o'clock lecture...

I've been reading some really great blogs today. Its quite amazing how complete strangers can teach you so much and how you can read about one similar situation from completely different viewpoints. The complete absence of hope and on the other hand - the complete and pure presence of hope even when in terms of the world (medically, scientifically, logically, etc.) it is actually absent. You know what I mean? It all comes down to what you believe in. It all comes down to what is the meaning of life, anyway? What am I here for? What are we all here for?
Is life measured by health? By achievement? By ability? By success? By fame? By money? By the choices we make? By bloodlines? By society?

A lot of questions, but strangely I'm not really confused. Strangely I have peace and know for sure that amongst all the madness there is One thing that is constant and good - yesterday, today and forever.

{For you created my inmost being, You knit me together in my mother's womb - Psalm 139:13}

The Last Straw

The Times of India is running this program in Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and one other Metro (Not Bangalore) called "Teach India" where they are calling volunteers around the city to volunteer two hours of their time every week to teach kids who've never been exposed to education... So a bunch of these kids came to our college today... They live on the streets near Haji Ali and they were so cute! Their clothes were all ragged and everything - it was quite a contrast to our fashionably clad girls in college; well, atleast half of them, the other half would be in salwar kameez or a burkha and then there are people like us who don't always fall into a category (!!)... Anyway, it was still a contrast. One of the little boys didn't stop crying... Poor thing, he seemed mortified... He wouldn't speak, he just kept crying. I guess everything was just too new and shocking for him... He's probably never seen anything outside of his short life on the streets. It dawned on me, that alleviating poverty isn't just about giving a man a fish, or even teaching him how to fish or whatever.. you have to change the way these people (and that's about 22% of India's I.2ish billion people!!)think... re-socialise them into something other than what they've known all their lives. Now that's a mammoth job.
I'm not a part of "Teach India" cause I'm already doing a placement somewhere else and there are about 40 volunteers from my college and not (yet) enough kids (Hah!) but hats off to the Times of India for initiating this. Let's hope the rest of India catches on and makes India's problems their problems...
I'd just die if I didn't know, if I didn't believe that ultimately there is, atleast, hope.
